Virtual Reality Lab in Gothenburg

Digitalization, sustainable electric solutions, automation and shareconomy open up new possibilities for future sustainable transport solutions. By studying and testing the conditions in a VR lab for self-driving, shared, electric vehicles in system solutions, we also hope to strengthen the VR lab as a method.

New technology for self-driving, shared, electric vehicles in system solutions must be tested in complex, real situations in order to understand how to best implement it. In a VR lab, tests are run in a typical environment with typical users so that the technology, business models and regulatory system can be developed, tested and demonstrated in a real context.

This project aims to strengthen and develop the existing technical and organizational platform that is being created within the scope of Drive Sweden (an innovation program financed by Vinnova). Accordingly, VR labs will get a strong and sustainable introduction into Sweden's innovation system. We hope that this will add momentum and get more stakeholders involved so that we can more quickly reach the goal of making Sweden a leader in smart, sustainable transports. The Gothenburg Region is striving to set up a model, both nationally and globally, so that, over the long run, it can attract companies and expertise to the region and Sweden.

The feasibility study will identify the main factors required for setting up a VR lab for self-driving, shared, electric vehicles in system solutions. The goal is also to identify the prerequisites required so that a VR lab can help bring about a lasting implementation of smart sustainable transport on a large scale and with powerful international recognition. The feasibility study has collected knowledge and experience from existing VR labs in Gothenburg (like Drive Me and ElectriCity). It has also looked at international examples. Through wide-ranging collaboration within the city and with a variety of innovation leaders, we have arrived at a consensus, a perspective understanding and have worked out a basic structure for the concept of a VR lab.

The project has also expanded the cloud-based infrastructure that has been developed within the scope of Drive Sweden (an innovation program financed by Vinnova). In addition, it has helped spread and implement activities to encourage more VR labs to start up.

The project is coordinated by the City of Gothenburg’s Traffic and Public Transport Authority. Viktoria Swedish ICT (a nonprofit research institute) is in charge of the feasibility study for setting up a VR lab for self-driving, shared, electric vehicles in system solutions and it has received funding from Vinnova during 2016 and 2018.
