About Nordic University Days

Nordic University Days 2024 took place on 23–24 September in Brussels, following the successful first two events in 2019 and 2022. This year, the conference focused on four themes:

  1. possibilities for the next programming period;

  2. informing and developing knowledge among Nordic Rectors about EU policy and programmes for research, education and innovation;

  3. raising awareness about Nordic universities’ interests in future EU policies and programmes for research, education and innovation policies;

  4. providing a platform for networking with EU- policy and decision-makers.

The programme organisers of this year’s Nordic University Days were Aarhus University Brussels Office, Gothenburg European Office, Greater Copenhagen EU Office, University Alliance Stockholm Trio, Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) Brussels Office, Universities in South Sweden Brussels Office, University of Bergen (UiB) Brussels Office, University of Alto, Universities of Turku Brussels Office, and the Norwegian Rectors’ Conference.

Key take aways 2024

  • Excellence-Driven Framework for the next Framework Program for research and innovation: Participants called for a simplified, excellence-oriented Framework Programme for Research and Innovation (FP10).

  • Academic Freedom & Autonomy: Safeguarding these core values emerged as a priority in light of rising geopolitical pressures. Nordic universities emphasized the need for policy to support institutional autonomy and combat external interference.

  • Science for Policy (S4P): A unified European S4P framework was advocated to improve communication between scientists and policymakers, bridging the gap to bring evidence-based insights to the heart of EU policy.
