International relations

Gothenburg is a sustainable city that is open to the world. We believe that international relations are important for the future. There is also great international interest in Gothenburg. By being receptive and sharing, we create good relationships with the outside world.

International activities pursued by the City of Gothenburg are focused primarily on promoting the city’s interests abroad, as well as creating opportunities for an exchange of experience and knowledge with other cities and organizations worldwide.

The City of Gothenburg has several partner cities; Chicago, Kiel, Krakow, Lyon, Newcastle, Rostock, Shanghai, Tallinn and Xi’an. Most of these partnerships have an historical background. Possible collaborations take place within the assignments of various companies and administrations within the city. The City of Gothenburg and Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality have a partnership which makes it possible to develop projects together. The project work is supported by Swedish International Centre for Local Democracy (ICLD).

The City of Gothenburg is a member of about seventy international organizations; I.e. Eurocities, ECCAR, ICLEI and POLIS to mention a few.

At important ceremonies and visits, the City of Gothenburg is represented by the city's leading politicians. Visitors are welcomed in our cultural and historical heritage environments.
