Different ways to study SFI
Full time studies
Studying full time at study path 1 means that you study 30 hours per week.
Studying full time at study paths 2 or 3 means that you study 15 hours per week.
Part time studies
Studying part time means that you study between 3 and 12 hours per week, namely between one and up to four days a week.
Evening studies
If you work day time you can study in the evenings. Evening courses are always offered as part time studies. Each class is three hours long every evening. Classes begin after working hours, usually around 17.30 (5.30 PM). When you are enrolled in evening studies you are expected to study a lot at home.
Studying on Saturdays
If you study or work you can study sfi on Saturdays. Sfi on Saturdays are equivalent of seven study hours per week. You have class with a teacher three ours per week and you study at home using our online platform for the remaining four hours.
To study sfi on Saturdays you need to:
- Have passed secondary level studies in your home country (gymnasium in Swedish).
- Be used to studying a be able to study on your own without a teacher.
- Have good computer skills.
Sfi Intensive

If you have studied at university level in your home country you can study Sfi Intensive which means studying in a very high pace. You are in school for 15 hours per week and you have to study on your own for at least 20 hours per week. If you have an education within health care there is a special orientation where you study sfi for 20 hours per week, five of them are focused on the health care profession.
You are expected to study on your own for the remaining 20 hours. You have to be able to finish sfi levels C and D in 30 weeks.
To study Sfi Intensive you have to:
- Be able to able 40 hours per week. You cannot combine Sfi Intensive with work or other studies.
- Know English.
- Have good computer skills.
- Be able to work independently using our online platform.
To study distance education
You participate in one webinar and personal guidance per week. The rest the time you study on your own with your computer. The standardized text is taken at your school. Du need good computer skills, access to a computer and the ability to study on your own using our online platform.
Sfi Distance is available on study path 3.
To study Sfi Distance you need
- Good computer skills
- Access to a computer with internet access, a program for writing text and an e-mail address
- The ability to study on your own using our online platform.
To study Sfi Flexible (Digiflex)
Digiflex is a form of studies where you have the possibility to meet your teacher in your school at different occasions while studying from home on your own using our online platform. Digiflex is suitable for you who have irregular working hours and the need for a more flexible way to study.
To study Digiflex you need
- Good computer skills
- Study sfi on level C or D.
- Have studied for at least ten years in your native country.
- Be present on at least one lesson per week.
- Access to a computer with internet access, a program for writing text and an e-mail address
To study sfi online
If you work or do anything else during day time you can study sfi online. You have one three hour lesson with a teacher and one three hour online distant lesson per week. The lessons begin after regular working hours, around 17.30 (5.30PM).
When you study Sfi Online you are expected to study a lot at home. A standardized test is being taken at school.
Sfi Online is available on study path 3 and it is always part time studies.
To study sfi online need
- Good computer skills.
- Access to a computer with internet access, a program for writing text and an e-mail address.
- The ability to study a lot on your own using our online platform.
- Be present on at least one lessor per week.
To study on a Folk High School
You can study sfi on a folk high school. You will get the same education and/or sfi courses but it is not financed by the City of Gothenburg.
You have to choose which folk high school you want to study at.

Sfi and internship combined
Sfi and internship combined means that you study Swedish while having an internship.
The schools’ sfi coaches help you find an internship. They make use of your skills and future study goals and career goals.
At the internship you learn Swedish while you get practical vocational training which can shorten your time in sfi and path to a job.
