School Travel Card

If you are registered in Gothenburg and attend high school, you can receive a school travel card for daily travel to and from school.

Main rules for receiving a school travel card:

  • You must be eligible for study allowance under the Student Aid Act.
  • You can receive a school travel card up to and including the spring term of the year you turn 20.
  • The card is valid for daily travel between your residence (registered address) and school.
  • You must not receive a boarding allowance.

If you are registered in the City of Gothenburg

If you are registered in Gothenburg and attend high school, you can get a travel card for public transportation for your daily commute to and from school.

  • If you attend a high school within the Gothenburg region*, you do not need to apply for a school travel card. The card will be automatically sent to your home address.
  • If you attend a folk high school or a high school outside the Gothenburg region, you must apply using the form Ansökan om skolkort för dagliga resor.
  • If you study remotely in another municipality, you can get a travel card within Gothenburg for study-related travel, for example, to the library.
  • Exchange students studying at high schools in Gothenburg can also get a school travel card if they are under 20 years of age.

*Gothenburg region includes the municipalities: Ale, Alingsås, Göteborg, Härryda, Kungsbacka, Kungälv, Lerum, Lilla Edet, Mölndal, Partille, Stenungsund, Tjörn, and Öckerö.

If you are not registered in the City of Gothenburg

If you are not registered in Gothenburg but attend a high school in the city, you must contact the municipality you are registered in, as they are responsible for your school travel card.

How do I get my card?

Before the start of the school year

  • Students with a complete Swedish personal ID number who attend high school within the Gothenburg region will automatically be sent cards to their home address.
  • If you have a temporary personal number, contact your school for information on how to get your card.

New residents (July–August) in the city of Gothenburg must contact the school travel card administration by email to receive their card: skolkort@educ.goteborg.se  

If attending a folk high school or school outside the Gothenburg region*, you must apply for a card in the municipality where you are registered.

During the school year

Students who move to Gothenburg during the school year should contact their school to receive a school travel card.

What if I have not received my card?

If you have not received your card, contact the school travel card administration via email skolkort@educ.goteborg.se for help as soon as possible after school starts, but no later than September 30. After this date, a 200 SEK administrative fee will be charged for a new card.

When and where is the card valid?

  • The card is valid for the times and zones printed on the front of the card.
  • The card is valid non-holiday weekdays August 10 – December 23 (fall term) and January 7 – June 18 (spring term).
  • The card is also valid for the following school year from August 10 – September 15.
  • The card is valid Monday–Friday (non-holidays) during school breaks, for example, fall break, winter break, and Easter break.
  • An evening leisure ticket (fritidsbiljett) is included in your school travel card and is valid weekdays 19:00–22:00.
  • The leisure ticket is valid during the same time periods as your school travel card during the school terms.
  • If you have lessons or other school activities that require you to travel when the card is not valid, contact your school.
  • When travelling with other travel companies such as SJ or Öresundståg, please see their respective travel conditions.

If you want to travel evenings and weekends

Students under 20 years can purchase a Leisure card (fritidskort) valid in other areas or municipalities. The leisure card (fritidskort) can be purchased at Västtrafik stores or agents such as Pressbyrån, ICA, and 7-Eleven  For prices and more info, visit Västtrafik’s website. 

If you live alternately with your parents

If your parents live in different municipalities and you live alternately with both, you can apply to upgrade your card to cover both areas. To receive an upgrade card you must:

  • Be eligible for a school card according to the main rules.
  • Be registered with the parent living in Gothenburg. The other parent must be registered in another municipality besides Gothenburg.

Have you lost your card?

If you have lost your card, contact your school administrator for information about the process to receive a replacement card. You must to pay a 200 SEK administrative fee for a replacement card. Your lost card will be deactivated, and a new one will be sent to your registered home address. Once your lost card has been deactivated, it cannot be reactivated. Even if you should find your lost card, you must wait for your new card.

School card not working

If your card stops working you should first go to a Västtrafik shop or agent (e.g., Pressbyrån, ICA, 7-Eleven) to check why it is not working. If the card needs to be replaced, you should turn it in to your school or send an email to: skolkort@educ.goteborg.se

If you quit school, change schools, or move

  • If you change schools within Zone A (Göteborg, Härryda, Kungälv, Partille, Mölndal, Öckerö), you keep your card. 
  • If you need a card for a different zone, contact the school travel card administration by email: skolkort@educ.goteborg.se
  • If you need a card with lower coverage, your old card will be deactivated and a new Zone A or Zone AB card will be ordered for you.
  • If you quit school, your card will be deactivated.
  • If you move to another municipality, contact your new municipality to receive a new school travel card. Your current card will automatically be deactivated.
  • If you receive boarding allowance (inackorderingstillägg), you must notify the school travel card administration immediately. Otherwise, you may be required to pay for your card. Your card will be deactivated immediately if you receive boarding allowance.

Personal Data Processing – School Travel Card

To issue you a school travel card, The Education Administration (Utbildningsförvaltningen) processes your personal ID number, name, address, student ID, municipality, school and class.
The Education Administration (UBF) is the data controller for the processing of this personal data in accordance with the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), Article 6, point c) Legal obligation. You have the right to request access to your personal data, request correction or deletion or restriction of processing of your personal data, object to the processing of your personal data as well as lodge a complaint about our processing of your personal data to the Swedish Data Protection Authority (Datainspektion).
