LUSTA - Livable Urban Soundscape Test Arena

The LUSTA project is helping the City of Gothenburg study how it can reduce noise in the city in order to improve the quality of life for those who live and work here. In the first stage, the project studies the prerequisites for a future test arena.

The purpose and goal is to contribute to the development of noise-absorbing solutions by studying the prerequisites for setting up a test arena in a real urban environment, combined with a virtual living lab experience. The City of Gothenburg, Chalmers University of Technology and the University of Gothenburg are all participating in the project, which is being financed by Vinnova in 2017 and 2018. The focus is on business intelligence and specifying a location for the planned test arena.

LUSTA’s long-term goal is to contribute to the development of noise-absorbing solutions and thereby contribute to a good sound environment (in Gothenburg and other cities). There is hope that the project will generate more knowledge in research, along with solutions to noise problems. Furthermore, the intention is to share both knowledge and results with other cites that are trying to solve noise problems.

By creating a test arena that will attract technology and solutions to Gothenburg, the project can contribute to the development of technology and the city can obtain access to solutions for noise problems. The test arena is planned as a combination of test arenas in real environments, along with a simulated environment to assess human health effects and reactions.

Later on, plans are to provide material manufacturers with a real environment for testing their products. The results will be used in a virtual acoustic environment in which the sound image can be simulated to the real scale. This will occur in a living lab, where reference groups, residents, professionals (like urban planners) and other stakeholders can experience the impact and share their reactions. From the results and experience in auralization (computer simulation of the audio environment), LUSTA also aims to assess the health effects on humans. All of this will be used in urban planning aimed at a higher quality of life, with a focus on human health.
