Collaboration platforms

The City of Gothenburg’s Traffic and Public Transport Authority is involved in several collaboration platforms aimed at highlighting issues that will help in developing sustainable, safe mobility. Collaboration between government authorities, industry and academia can help identify new perspectives and speed up development.

CLOSER 2.0

Closer 2.0 is a national, neutral arena for collaboration on transport efficiency. Academia, industry and government authorities are cooperating in a project to develop and spread knowledge on efficient transports.

The City of Gothenburg’s Traffic and Public Transport Authority is participating in several projects and activities within the scope of Closer 2.0, like data collection for decision-making and planning for freight-friendly cities. Closer 2.0 aims to improve transport efficiency by creating logistic solutions that are as efficient as possible from a resource, energy, environmental and economic perspective. The goal is higher sustainability, growth and competitiveness.

The wide-ranging collaboration between partners enables Closer 2.0 to capture needs and ideas that facilitate new innovations and solutions for higher sustainability in the transport sector. Research that is being conducted from this platform will benefit both industry and society.

Priority areas for Closer 2.0 are: Urban Mobility, which focuses on new, sustainable solutions for freight and passenger transports in cities; High Capacity Transport (HCT), which focuses on how HCT vehicles can increase energy efficiency and decrease carbon dioxide emissions; and the development of sustainable, safe and efficient transport routes.

SAFER 2.0

SAFER 2.0 is a platform for research and development of traffic safety issues. The City of Gothenburg’s Traffic and Public Transport Authority is one of thirty partners from academia, industry and society involved in the platform.

SAFER’s vision is to, based on expertise from academia, industry and government authorities, serve as a hub for research on vehicle and traffic safety in real traffic environments. SAFER is a competence center and broad platform for research that will contribute to new safety systems and solutions.

Traffic safety is just one component of a city’s attractiveness and it is a prerequisite for future mobility. Infrastructure alone cannot provide solutions for all traffic safety issues. Vehicle technology solutions cannot provide all the answers either. This is why there must be healthy collaboration between researchers, vehicle developers and the public sector.

When SAFER started up in 2006, the focus was primarily on the vehicle technology aspects of traffic safety. Today, though, SAFER has widened its focus to cover unprotected road-users, i.e. cyclists and pedestrians. At present, the largest number of serious injuries registered are bicycle accidents. It is hoped that SAFER will generate ideas for research projects from various perspectives in order to save lives in traffic.

For many years, the City of Gothenburg’s Traffic and Public Transport Authority has participated in an analysis group for traffic safety and in several projects within the scope of SAFER. The long-term benefit of the project is acquiring knowledge on traffic safety and incorporating applicable knowledge into the right efforts. Gothenburg has a strong international brand when it comes to traffic safety. Participation in SAFER 2.0 is just one of the efforts aimed at realizing the city’s visions on sustainable travel.

Test Site Sweden West

Test and demonstration facilities are key to making the region’s vehicle industry more competitive in an international market. The Test Site Sweden West project is striving to set up new test facilities and optimize the use existing facilities.

The City of Gothenburg’s Traffic and Public Transport Authority participates as a reference group in Test Site Sweden (TSS), which is a neutral arena for collaboration on vehicles, transport and environmental technology. TSS initiates and develops test and demonstration environments for vehicles in order to support the development of sustainable transports.

Test Site Sweden West (TSS-W) is one of the projects within the scope of TSS. TSS-W is run by Lindholmen Science Park and Innovatum and its purpose is to create good conditions for the transport and vehicle sector in the region by, for example, serving as a hub for testing and demonstration activities, attracting investments and marketing the region as a leader in testing and demonstration. The goal is to strengthen the competitiveness of the vehicle and transport sector, thereby creating more jobs.
