The Palmhouse
Since 1878, the Palmhouse has been a sparkling work of art in glass and cast iron in the center of the park. Inspired by the famous Crystal Palace in London, it has been a popular attraction, where visitors can experience nearly 1,000 square meter of tropical heat and a diversity of exotic plants, palms obviously among them.
It is the head gardener Georg Löwegren who travels to Scotland to order the spectacular house, which arrives in kit form in May 1878. When it is completed in November of the same year, people in Gothenburg flock to see their new winter garden. For 25 öre (50 öre on Wednesdays and Saturdays) you could travel the world like never before.
The Palm House is divided into sections representing different climates, from the mild temperatures of the Camellia House and the Mediterranean House to the heat of the Tropical House and the Aquatic House. The five sections give both a good general picture of the flora of foreign countries and a flavour of the last century that contrasts with the stylistic ideal of our own day.
