Gå inte på isen på Delsjöarna

Senast uppdaterad: 10 februari 2026 klockan 11:28

About the Mission

Europe is already experiencing the effects of climate change, and climate-related risks are increasing rapidly across the continent. Most countries are facing the consequences of extreme weather events - such as heavy rainfall, heatwaves and rising sea levels - as well as the growing impacts on societies, infrastructure and economies. In Gothenburg, heatwaves and heavy rainfall have been identified as the city’s most significant climate risks.

To respond to the challenges of a changing climate, the city works strategically across the municipal administration and with local partners to strengthen collaboration, increase flexibility, and promote long-term planning – supporting the city’s transition towards greater sustainability and resilience.

The EU Mission on Adaptation to Climate Change

Through the EU Mission on Adaptation to Climate Change, the EU has committed to supporting at least 150 European regions and communities on their journey towards climate resilience by 2030. The mission supports regions and cities to:

  • Understand and identify current and future climate risks,
  • Develop strategic plans to prepare for and manage the impacts of climate change,
  • Implement innovative solutions on the ground to enhance climate resilience.

Additionally, the mission fosters collaboration between public authorities, businesses, researchers, and citizens to support knowledge exchange, climate planning, and co-design climate adaptation solutions.

Gothenburg signed the Mission Charter in 2022, formally joining the EU Mission on Adaptation to Climate Change alongside more than 300 regions and cities across Europe.

Gothenburg's work within the mission

Gothenburg has benefited from the support activities offered by the Mission Platform, which was established by the European Commission to help participating cities and regions achieve the mission’s objectives. This support has included peer-to-peer exchanges with other cities and regions, as well as technical assistance from the platform’s experts to strengthen the city’s administrative capacity.

Peer learning

Gothenburg took part in a peer-learning group on heatwaves together with cities and regions from across Europe. Through this exchange, the city gained insights into others’ experiences and practical measures, which helped to strengthen internal knowledge about heatwave risks och potential solutions and build new connections with peers.

Technical assistance

Gothenburg received technical assistance from the Mission Platform, which focused on analysing the city’s climate adaptation plan and measures, strengthening communication and citizen engagement, and identifying relevant funding and financing options for adaptation measures. The support provided concrete feedback and examples from other cities, inspiring new ideas and approaches for Gothenburg’s climate adaptation work.
